Iordan Zdravkov Iordanov was born in 1947 in the town of Byala Cherkva, Lovech District. He completed his higher university education at Moscow Energy Institute, major Nuclear power plants and mounts, qualification "Engineer – heat physicist". Iordan Iordanov has devoted his professional career to the nuclear energy in one of its key aspects: nuclear safety, radiation protection, raw and processed nuclear fuel, radioactive wastes and environmental protection. He started his career in 1976 as an engineer – operator of reactor at Kozlodui NPP. During the same year he became a leading designer in the Nuclear Power Plants Department in Energoproect – Sofia, where individually and as part of a team he develops projects related to: the processing and storage of radioactive wastes, the storage and transportation of "the processed" nuclear fuel, technical and working project of fifth and sixth reactors, working projects on 1, 2, 3 and 4 reactors at Kozlodui NPP. Four years of his professional career he devoted to the work in the Committee on the Use of Nuclear Energy for Non-Military Purposes at the Inspection on the safe exploitation of NPP, a division first established in Bulgaria at that time. He was involved mainly in the preparation of the draft of the Law on the Use of Nuclear Energy for Non-Military Purposes, regulations and ordinances. In 1983 he went back to Kozlodui NPP, where is was successively employed as a Deputy Head of Reactor Workshop on New Capacities, Head of Production – Technical Department of Fifth and Sixth Block, Chief Inspector on Nuclear Safety, Head of Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Department and speaker of Kozlodui NPP, Head of Safety Division. Since 1994 he worked at the National Electric Company as a specialist on the information and public relations, specialist on radioactive wastes and nuclear fuel, Safety Manager. In April 2000 Iordan Iordanov became the first Executive Director of Kozlodui NPP following its separation as an independent company from the National Electric Company. He took part as an expert in the group of the advisors to the General Director of IAAE - Vienna, during the period 1986-1988 on matters related to the safe storage of processed nuclear fuel. On many occasions he participated as an expert in the establishment of the "PRIS", "IRS" and "DATA" systems of IEAE – Vienna. He took part as officially licensed expert on behalf of Bulgaria in the missions of ÌÀÀÅ - Vienna:
Since 1 November 1995 he is a consultant of IAAE - Vienna on the issues of Strengthening and Improvement of the Safety Culture in the former socialist countries. He is a chief coordinator of the first and subsequent missions OSART and ASSET in Kozloduy NPP. He participates in the events of WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) in Bulgaria and abroad on the reconstruction and modernization of Kozlodui NPP. He is one of the founders in 1991 and an active participant in the global information system NucNet for information of events and activities in the field of nuclear energy. In 2002 Iordan Iordanov founded Nucleon Consulting Agency of which he is a General Manager. The agency carries out consulting activities in the field of quality assurance; restructuring and privatization; pricing and regulation of the energy market; the management and funding of projects and programmes; the transportation and storage of nuclear fuel; the processing and burying of radioactive wastes; the ultimate shutdown of nuclear facilities. Provision of technical assistance to state institutions, non-government organisations, business circles, financial institutions, trade union and political organisations, etc. in the field of the energy policy and energy strategy in Bulgaria. He is a publisher of a monthly information bulletin NucleonInfo devoted to current issues in the field of energy. Iordan Iordanov is a Chairman of the Management Board of the non-profit organization Nucleon Energy Consult, established for the benefit of the public for preparation of independent analyses, researches and forecasts in the field of energy, energy effectiveness and environmental protection. Development of safe exploitation of renewable energy sources, increase of the awareness of the public on the condition and safety principles in the production of energy through: the organisation of seminars and other forms of training; publication of analyses and information materials; preparation and implementation of communication programmes; active participation in international projects on the environmental protection issues, the energy effectiveness and safety in energy.
